Legacy
Reverend Dr Gomba Fortune Oyor was born on July 16, 1959. He was from Ogale in Eleme local government area of Rivers State, and was the third of seven children, six boys and one girl. He was the General Overseer of the Spring of Freedom Christian Center and President of God-Will-Do-It Ministries, headquartered in Ibadan. He was married and blessed with four sons.
In 1974, he attended Agbonchia Primary School and finished at Ogale Primary School. He attended Stella Maris College, Port Harcourt, from 1974 to 1979. He received his Diploma and Bachelor’s degree in Secretarial Administration from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, from 1982 to 1987. His Masters and PhD were in Community Development from the University of Ibadan.
As a young man, he had bad friends who lured him into a sinful life. This resulted in many difficulties, including writing his West African School Certificate Examination four times and becoming severely ill.
He gave his life to Christ on May 5, 1979, in a miraculous manner. Jesus healed him, and he no longer needed the ten tablets of medication he took daily to stay alive. Before his healing, he was always with his drugs and took them at the times prescribed by the doctor. He was taking a total of 300 tablets every month.
Ministry
In his final year in college, he was born again in the Scripture Union fellowship under the ministry of Bro Nathaniel Oruobo (a fellow final-year student). Rufus Green, a final-year student who had persuaded him to accept Jesus for the preceding five years (1974-1979), was the happiest person that day. He said it was a five-year-awaited miracle, and their friendship grew from there.
Rufus Green served as a mentor to him as he learnt to be zealous for God, dedicated to the things of the kingdom, generous, and passionate about winning souls for the kingdom. After graduating from college, they travelled together to his place, Eleme. They joined a fellowship that later became the Christian Fellowship Deliverance Ministry and Christian Fellowship Deliverance Church, now known as the Commonwealth Covenant Church International, with headquarters in Alode, Eleme, Rivers State. Around 1980 and 1981, he was elected the fellowship president, and he served until 1990 when he handed over to the present General Overseer, Archbishop Moses Kattey.
In November 1979, he was invited to preach at Baptist Church, Ogale, Eleme. After the message, everyone except the church leader answered the altar call for salvation. The leader’s wife said, “If we have been hearing the word of God like this, we would have given our lives to Jesus long ago.” That statement made him restless.
After praying, he returned to the church uninvited the following Sunday. Once they saw him, they asked him to preach again. That was how he became a Baptist and rose to the position of Youth Director of Ogoni Baptist Association, Rivers State, within seven years
When he got admitted into Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, in 1982, he started the Student Christian Movement of Nigeria (SCM). By the time he graduated in 1987, they had over 100 students on their Master List.
In 1987, he relocated to Ibadan for his National Youth Service (NYSC) as the Travelling Secretary of the Student Christian Movement (SCM) of Nigeria, and he later became the National Traveling Secretary, a full-time employment.
He received the vision of God-Will-Do-It Ministries on July 28, 1983, at 8:15 a.m. in the All Universities and Colleges Conference (AUCC) of the SCM of Nigeria. In his words, “The Lord told me I will spread His healing and deliverance power round the world.” After he heard the Lord, he immediately started writing a quarterly magazine called GOD-WILL-DO-IT, which he freely gave out for nine years.
During the last weekend of September 1991, he and his wife, Reverend Mrs. Patience Oyor, had a fasting and prayer program with Mrs Esther Amure, Sister Funmi Onipe, Sister Bose, Sister Biola, Bro Francis Oluwatuyi and Reverend Blessed ljebor. The miracles God did made Mrs Amure suggest that the prayer program be held every month, and he acted on the advice. By December 1991, the monthly prayer program recorded 56 people.
In March 1992, the Lord told him that the 1983 vision was ready and that he should pursue it fully. On August 18, 1992, the ministry was formally launched at Immanuel College of Theology, Samonda, Ibadan. And on the last Sunday of June 1998, the church was inaugurated.
The Spring of Freedom Christian Center now has several arms, including the School of Healing and Deliverance, God-Will-Do-It-Ministries, Davidic Generation Church, and the Gomba-Oyor Theological Seminary.
